As opposed to what most people believe, the West Island is home to people in need. Its wealthy reputation has a tendency to overshadow the needs that are present on the territory. With most of its neighborhoods being considered food deserts, food security is a top priority for organizations established in the West Island.
The West Island is a vast territory, and it can be difficult to keep up to speed with all the initiatives and projects within it. The network was therefore born out of a need to optimize communication channels between food security stakeholders, to facilitate collaboration and promote the sharing of resources.
Another need that motivated its creation was to raise awareness of the issues present in the West Island among its citizens and the City of Montreal. That's why education and awareness-raising, about food security issues and the resources available on its territory, are at the heart of the network's actions.
The West Island Food Security Project has been financially supported by Centraide Grand Montréal and led by the Table de Quartier du Sud de l'Ouest-de-l'île (TQSOI). Since the project covers the whole West Island, the TQSOI worked in close collaboration with the Table de Quartier du Nord de l'Ouest-de-l'île (TQNOIM).
Many thanks to the multiple organizations and engaged citizens who participated throughout the project to inform and lead the action plan along with selecting priority actions.
